2018
Eugene Suslov and Oleksandr Maleiev founded the IT company Thorphill: they built projects and worked as a contractor. Alongside that they ran an educational project called "Building and growing online schools" — so they were up to their necks in teaching and knew exactly what they needed from an LMS.
A year later
They ran into a problem: every LMS on the market had something wrong with it — the features were thin here, the price bit there, and somewhere else support was rude and couldn't care less. The thought came by itself: "We're an IT company — we can build a proper platform for ourselves and for everyone else suffering just as much."
End of 2019
Work on the new LMS was already in full swing. We were fired up by the idea of making a revolution in online education.
March 2020
The world changed — and we had to change drastically. We closed the training arm completely and cut part of the team. Demand for online education was climbing fast, and we threw everything at the platform.
Another year on
A rebrand: Thorphill → Softbook. The name Thorphill was too complicated — it hurt recognition and word of mouth. Softbook is simple, and it's connected to what we do.
Today
We're growing hard and looking for better ways to do things. The company is expanding fast, but we haven't forgotten the idea it all started with.
"One winter evening, after weeks of going through name options, I was leafing through a paperback when it hit me: 'a soft book — Softbook.' That's it, I thought."
